The Baptism of the Lord

After all the people had been baptized and Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove.  And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”  Luke 3:21-22

Today’s Feast marks the conclusion of the Christmas Season and the beginning of Ordinary Time.  It’s a feast of transition from Jesus’ hidden life to that of His public ministry.  It also echoes the theme of the Epiphany in that the Baptism of the Lord is another manifestation announcing Jesus’ divinity to all of His first followers and to the disciples of John the Baptist.

Sunday TV Mass

Do you know someone who can't get to Mass? Since 1952 , the Archdiocese of Washington has produced a weekly televised Mass for those who are homebound, broadcast from the Crypt Church of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. It is a wonderful ministry for those members of our Catholic family who are unable to be physically present with a local worshiping community for the Sunday Eucharistic Liturgy.

The Mass airs every Sunday at 10:30am on WDCW-50:

  • No cable; Dish or DIRECTV subscribers: Ch. 50
  • Comcast: Ch 23 in Washington, DC and Montgomery County: Ch. 3
    in
Prince George's County and Southern Maryland
  • RCN: Ch. 15
  • Verizon: Ch. 3

Do you know the qualifications to be a God parent?

 1) Be a registered Parishioner.  2) Have received all the sacraments of initiation.  3) Are a practicing Catholic (coming to Mass).  4) Attend a baptism preparation class.
This also applies to someone who has been asked to be a Godparent from another parish.

If you are being admitted or have been admitted to the hospital and would like to receive Communion, please contact the rectory or have a family member contact the rectory with your name, the hospital, the room number and anticipated length of stay.  This way, either a priest or extraordinary minister of Holy Communion can provide you with the sacrament.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be. What came to be through him was life, and this life was the light of the human race; the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (St. John the Evangelist, Apostle; John 1:1-5).
